INTRODUCTION TO CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, MICHIGAN
Chesterfield Township is located in Macomb County, Michigan and encompasses an area of approximately 26 square miles except for the portion bordering Anchor Bay on Lake St. Clair. The population at the 2000 census was 37,004. The Township was established in 1842 and became a Charter Township in 1989 by Resolution. The 3 school districts located within Chesterfield Township are Anchor Bay, L'Anse Creuse and New Haven.
The Michigan State Legislature officially created Chesterfield Township in 1842 by Public Act 57. The most important harvest was salt. Chesterfield contained salt springs whose brine when evaporated provided a trade good worth its weight in gold.
